The Builders...
"We run a community that we would want to live in!"

There is no doubt in our minds that as the owners of the company we take pride in Sandycove Acres. We want it to be a place people are proud to call home and one that we are proud to say we own! As we make every decision we keep the concerns of the homeowners first of mind as they are the most important part of Sandycove.

Rod Rice and Trevor Robertson are the sons of the founders of Sandycove Acres; Maxwell Rice and David Roberston. They with a team of invaluable employees are the ones that help to make Sandycove the dynamic community it is.

The History

The idea that eventually became Sandycove Acres got its start in the 1960’s when two entrepreneurs from the Toronto area brought their expertise from different backgrounds together in order to fill a gap in the housing market in southern Ontario.

Dave Robertson was a successful businessman involved in the sale and rental of manufactured housing units – mobile homes, office trailers, recreational vehicles and other forms of prefabricated construction. Max Rice was a well respected residential builder and land developer from the time he left the Air Force after World War 2.

Both Rice and Robertson noted that of all of the types of housing being offered in the growing city of Toronto, there seemed to be an unfilled niche. That niche was the “empty nesters” – the persons or couples whose children had finally left the nest. Now, with a house probably larger than their needs, they were looking out at their neighbourhood, seeing their friends move away and younger families moving in. Retirement was at hand or just around the corner. It was time to start enjoying a lifestyle which theyisland had earned over the past thirty years or so. The empty nesters were about to start looking for a smaller nest.

After an analysis of lifestyle communities in the sunbelt areas of the U.S., Max and Dave agreed that the time was ripe to develop an adult lifestyle community within easy driving distance of the city of Toronto. They rightly decided that such a community should be located in a rural setting but not too far from friends, family, entertainment and other important services. The houses should be bungalows, easy to maintain, and ready for immediate occupancy. Above all there should be amenities which the homeowners could use as they saw fit, with no additional membership fees.

These were the fundamental ingredients which Robertson and Rice put into Sandycove Acres. The result was that in 1971 the first residents of Sandycove Acres moved into a community where the recreation centre (only one at that time!) and the swimming pool were already waiting for them. Paved roads, underground utilities and landscaped home sites awaited the pioneers of Sandycove Acres.

More than 30 years later the originators of Sandycove Acres have seen it grow from a community of some 100 homes to almost 1200. It is the largest adult lifestyle community of its type in Ontario. If you ask the owners what sets Sandycove Acres apart, they will tell you that the secret of Sandycove Acres’ longevity and success has been the individuals and couples who made the decision to enjoy the Sandycove lifestyle. They are the true success stories of Sandycove Acres.
